One Nuqta is an initiative by Shahryanshah Sirajuddin and Fatma Ulusoy Sirajuddin. The aim of creating this platform is to showcase their artistic and educational vision, as well as an avenue to involve their students to preserve, spread and serve traditional Islamic arts.

Our mission at One Nuqta is to provide access to the Islamic arts in a way that inspires the soul and to fuse traditional knowledge with modern approaches to impart an inclusive understanding of the sacred arts. We aim to be a bridge between the educators, artists, innovators and the global community - starting with One Nuqta.

Calligraphy

The art of calligraphy has always held a supreme position in Islamic arts. The most talented of calligraphers attained respectable positions as scribes in the Imperial Palace or as teachers of Imperial rulers.

Art of Illumination/Tezhip

Tezhip is the Turkish word used for the Islamic art of manuscript illumination. The word for tezhip is derived from the Arabic word for gold (dhahab or ذهب) which means turning into gold or covering with gold. Tezhip is an art form that has evolved over hundreds of years with its primary purpose being to beautify Islamic Arabic calligraphy.

MEET THE MASTERS

SHAHRYANSHAH SIRAJUDDIN

Shahryanshah Sirajuddin is a master calligrapher, educator and the founder of One Nuqta. He was born in Sangkulirang, Indonesia and graduated from the faculty of Islamic Law of Al-Azhar University, Egypt in 2009. In Egypt, Shahryanshah Sirajuddin studied under the guidance of Sheikh Belaid Hamidi and received an Ijazah for Riq’a, Diwani, and Diwani Jali scripts.

Following the recommendation of his master, he moved to Turkey in 2010 to continue his studies in calligraphy. He studied the Thuluth and Naskh scripts under the tutelage of a number of masters such as Hasan Çelebi, Ferhat Kurlu and Mümtaz Seçkin Durdu. He was awarded his Ijazah in Arabic calligraphy in a ceremony organized by IRCICA (Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture). Shahryanshah Hoca also received calligraphy lessons from various masters in Istanbul including Şavaş Çevik, Davut Bektaş, Ali Toy, Mehmed Özçay and Osman Özçay.

Shahryanshah Hoca has taken part and won multiple calligraphy competitions. His calligraphic artworks have been displayed in various galleries and exhibitions.

Shahryanshah Hoca has a passion for teaching calligraphy and through his unique pedagogical approach built on traditional methods, his students have in turn achieved international success. Shahryanshah Hoca teaches students from all over the world.

FATMA ULUSOY SIRAJUDDIN

Fatma Ulusoy Sirajuddin is a master Islamic manuscript illumination (tezhip) artist.  She was born in Istanbul and graduated from the European Islamic University Faculty of Islamic Sciences in 2012 and Anadolu University Open Education Faculty of Theology in 2016. Fatma began her journey studying Riq’a and Diwani scripts with her husband, Shahryanshah Sirajuddin. In 2015, she transitioned to manuscript illumination with the illumination master Ayşe Gülcan Özbalak. 

Fatma Hoca teaches the art of Islamic manuscript illumination to students from around the world. She has delivered online and in-person classes including intensive project-based programs. Her style is distinguished by its subtle yet sophisticated approach to adorning Qur’anic manuscripts in a manner that beautifies the text without detracting from it. Fatma Hoca is currently completing masters in fine arts and imparts her expertise in traditional and contemporary arts to her students.

    Hilya Sharifah

    Hilya Sharifah describes physical appearance and moral character of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him), the Arabic word ‘Hilya’ or its Turkish counterpart ‘Hilye’ means ‘adornment’ but can be taken to mean likeness, description, appearance, natural disposition, and/or characterisation. The real interpretation of the Hilye, is to illustrate our beloved Prophet’s moral, behavioural, and spiritual qualities along with his physical appearance.
